Welcome to the quarterly Natara News update!

Just a quick update to keep you informed of recent releases. We also have included some advice for customers who plan to purchase a new handheld.

Natara Supports Sony CLIÉ UX50!

New releases of Bonsai, DayNotez and Project@Hand 2 have been posted within the last month to support the wide screen landscape mode of this new handheld.

In addition to the device support, the new versions also have some minor feature additions and correct several bugs. The new versions are;
  • Natara Bonsai version 2.7.1
  • Natara DayNotez version 2.7.2
  • Natara Project@Hand 2 version 2.1.1
All three product updates are free of charge and are available from the Natara web site and other popular download sites. You can install the updates over your current installation.

Watch for landscape support to show up in new handhelds coming to market this fall.

Natara DatePak

Natara DatePak has been updated to support Pocket PC. If your organization or club has a mixed Palm OS and Pocket PC environment, then this DatePak update is for you. Starting with a single calendar package definition, DatePak generates both a Palm OS application and a Pocket PC application ready for distribution.

This update is free of charge and is available from the Natara web site.

Help out your club or organization today; build a DatePak calendar package and promote increased utilization of handhelds by your group. Learn more about DatePak and download a free trial from the Natara web site.

Upgrading to a New Device?

We frequently hear from customers who have recently replaced an old handheld and need new registration codes. This happens because the advice from many handheld manufacturers is to give the handheld a new HotSync user name. What they are really trying to say is; don't choose an existing HotSync account for your new handheld. They are trying to avoid the restoring of system databases originally on the old handheld onto the new handheld.

The intent is good, since the old system databases can cause compatibility problems on the new device. However, this breaks other applications since most 3rd party software registration codes are generated from the HotSync user name.

Our recommendation when upgrading is the following. Prior to synchronizing your new device for the first time, do this:
  • Run the Palm Desktop.
  • Select the Users command from the Tools menu.
  • Select your existing user name from the list (the one assigned to the older device), and click Rename. Rename the older device to something different. One trick is to change the spaces in your name. For example, "Bryan Nystrom" to "BryanNystrom".
  • Synchronize the old device so that HotSync Manager will rename the device. This also renames the HotSync user directory for this device.
  • Now you can synchronize your new device, and when prompted by HotSync Manager, give this device the original name (the name all of your applications are registered under).
At this point you can start to install your 3rd party applications just as you would if you had given the handheld a new name.
