Fall, 2007 Welcome to the quarterly Natara News update!
Natara DayNotez™ 3 for Palm OS v3.0.3 Update
Natara is excited to announce a point release of DayNotez 3 for Palm OS 5 mobile devices.
Since the release of DayNotez Palm v3.0.1, many bug fixes have been made for the v3.0.3 release. If you are running DayNotez v3.0.1 or v3.0.2 on your Palm, we suggest you install the free v3.0.3 update. One of the most requested changes in this version is the ability to return to the v2 editing mode for "wysiwyg" bullet and numbered lists. The tagged method introduced in v3 is still the preferred method, but this option is for those that like reading their entries directly from the edit view. This option is configurable from the Options/Prefs menu Edit tab by configuring the Use Plain Text Bullets checkbox. Don't forget to visit our forums if you need help or have questions or comments about this new release. To upgrade from an earlier version of DayNotez just install DayNotez 3 over your current installation. It's always best to make a backup of your current DayNotez database before upgrading. There is a backup topic in the user manual with more information. Bonsai™-on-a-stick
Bonsai for U3 is a portable version of Bonsai you can take with you wherever you go. All you need is a U3 smart drive. Not familiar with U3? On the U3 website they say "Imagine carrying your software on the same flash drive that carries your files. That’s what you can do with a U3 smart drive. You can plug it into any PC and work, play a game, message friends, send email, edit photos and more. A U3 smart drive makes any PC your own PC. And when you unplug it, it leaves no personal data behind." Sounds great for travelers, doesn't it? And now Bonsai can come along! Once installed on the U3 smart drive, you can use Bonsai on any PC that supports the U3 environment (Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Vista). Keep in mind when running Bonsai this way, synchronization to handheld devices is not supported. Download the Bonsai 4 for U3 setup to install. Bonsai can also be used on non-USB drives. While not officially supported by Natara, advanced users can find instructions on how to set up Bonsai on a non-USB drives in the Natara User Forums. As a parent, we all too often have to take our children to the doctor. Once past the initial questions of name, birthdate, etc. the doctor or nurse always moves on to the next common questions: when did this start, how high was the fever, how often are they vomiting.... This applies to our pets, too, when they have to visit the vetrinarian. So, when those questions came up I always found myself struggling -- "Um, well, I think it started last Wednesday or maybe Thursday. I can't remember what his temperature was but...." and I'm sure you can imagine how the conversation went from there. But, I found a fantastic and easy way to track illness and have an exact time and date when things occured. I use DayNotez! In September of 2006, for example (yes, I know exactly because I looked it up!), my son got the flu. He vomited for about 4 days and eventually ended up in the hospital due to dehydration. Throughout this whole process, though, I was able to tell the doctors exactly what date and time everything occured. I even tracked what he was eating and drinking as well as how much he slept. From past experience I had an idea what the doctors would want to know. In DayNotez I have a category for each of my children and then I set up a template for vomit (since it was happening so often). When my son would get sick I would just have to select the template and it was tracked. For me it was much faster than finding a pen and paper (then finding another pen, and then another until one works!). When we did take him to the ER I remember going over my notes with the doctor when he was taking the history. He said, "That's the best history I've ever had. What are you using?" I filled him in and joked about DayNotez being a requirement for every Mom and he replied "I wish." While our son was on medication DayNotez was also helpful tracking when he last received his meds. My husband would use it, too, if he gave the medication so it ended the question of "Did you give it to him, when and how much?" For this purpose I was using DayNotez desktop mostly, but overnight I would take my handheld with me so I could note anything that happened overnight. During the day I would have DayNotez open on the desktop so I could quickly click on the template. I also use DayNotez for other common "Mom Notez" like when one of the children says something especially cute or when noteable events happen, like tooth loss. It's not just for sickness anymore! I track anything I think I might like to have for their scrapbook later; the first day of school, his last day of speech therapy, his first time eating a new food and all kinds of other things. When I can go to my computer and make a quick 1-minute note I am more likely to do it versus having a paper journal and feeling as if I need to write many paragraphs at the end of the day. I hope you find this article useful and perhaps the next time your child (or pet) is sick you will consider using DayNotez to track it. If you have any parents or caregivers in your life consider giving them DayNotez as a gift! Questions? Comments? Contact natara@natara.com © 2007 Natara Software, Inc. All Rights Reserved.
