1.0 General
============================================================

Natara Bonsai installs in a 30 day evaluation mode. The
full product feature set is available for your use. After
30 days the conduit will no longer synchronize the outlines
until a product registration code is entered.

You can purchase a license for Bonsai from the Natara web site
at http://www.natara.com/bonsai/purchase.cfm.

============================================================
2.0 Quick Start Steps
============================================================

The following steps will get you up and running with
Natara Bonsai.

1) Open the downloaded Zip file and extract all the files
into a temporary directory. Run the setup program from
that location. Or, if you have downloaded the
self-extracting Zip file, run that executable and follow
the instructions.

2) Run the Natara Bonsai program from the Windows desktop.
Or, run it from the Start menu. The default is location
on the start menu is: Start->Programs->Natara Software->Bonsai

3) Create an outline and save under the name of your choice.

4) When you first save the outline you are asked if you want
to synchronize this outline with the handheld. Respond
yes to the prompt.

5) Perform a HotSync. The Natara Bonsai application is now installed
on your handheld. Run the Bonsai application on your handheld
device to initialize the application settings.

6) Perform a second HotSync. Your outline is now installed on your
handheld and is ready for use. (NOTE: The second HotSync is only
necessary after you first install Natara Bonsai. After that, your
outline database and file will by updated with each normal HotSync.)

============================================================
3.0 Upgrade from Previous Version
============================================================

When upgrading from a previous version, select the 'Update'
option on the first dialog of the InstallShield Wizard.

Be sure to install the new version of the Bonsai Palm OS
application onto your Palm OS device.

============================================================
4.0 Uninstalling
============================================================

Use the Add-Remove Programs control panel document to
uninstall Natara Bonsai from your desktop. This will not delete
any of your outline files. You must manually delete those files.

On your Palm device, use the Delete menu item under the
App menu to remove Bonsai and all outlines. This will not
delete any outlines stored on external storage cards. You must
use a storage card utility to delete those files.

5.0 Changes in this Release
============================================================

Changes in version 5.0.3
New on desktop:
- While in the outline view, changed the "Select All"
(keyboard shortcut Ctrl-A) so if any outline rows are
selected or if the entire text of the current outline
item is selected then the entire outline is selected.
Otherwise Ctrl-A will select the entire text of the
current item. If you wish to select the entire outline,
use "Select All" twice (i.e. press Ctrl-A twice).

Fixed on desktop:
- Fixed issues with exporting outlines to a Palm PDB
format. Exporting an outline with Task or Calendar
links would cause the Bonsai Palm app to crash when
opening the outline.
- Fixed Bonsai crash that would occur if configured to
sync an outline with the same outline file.
- Changed code to handle column size mis-configurations
in the outline file. This issue was seen when importing
Palm OS format outline files.

Changes in version 5.0.2
Fixed on desktop:
- Change to use buffered IO when writing outline files.
This was an uninitentional change introduced when the
outline file format changed to XML. This caused outline
writes, including when using the outline to outline file
sync feature, to be very slow when the file is located
on a resource over a slow link (i.e. internet based VPN
connection).

Changes in version 5.0.1
New on desktop:
- Bonsai Desktop support of outline to outline file sync.
Can be used by Bonsai USB users wishing to keep their
outlines in sync between their local desktop and
corresponding outlines on their USB drive. Feature
includes an option to auto-sync on outline open/save
operations. Configured from the Outline Details dialog
(right click the outline tab and select the properties
menu).
- Support for syncing outlines to Palm Pre devices for use
with Bonsai for Palm OS software ***VIA*** the Classic
emulator by MotionApps. Bonsai for Palm is certified for
the Classic emulator and Bonsai Desktop can sync your
desktop outlines with the Pre when it is connected as a
USB mass storage device. Use the outline to outline file
sync feature and select the Bonsai Palm outline on the
Pre device (will be named NO_<Outline Name>.pdb). Requires
a USB connection; does not support OTA sync. If you are
wondering about a Bonsai Palm Pre native application,
there are still too many unanswered questions for us to
make a decision. We currently have our resources already
dedicated on other platforms. If we decide to support the
WebOS or not also depends on how much share of the market
they attract.
- Improvements to the Find/Replace operations. These
operations now support incremental find and have options
to "search notes" and "search up". As you type your search
string, Bonsai will location and display the next found
occurrence of the partial search string. If the edit control
background for the search string switches to red, the search
string could not be found.
- New Quick Filter feature. Allows users to quickly define and
apply a temporary filter. Define by clicking the quick filter
toolbar icon in the filters toolbar or from the
Outline/Filter/Quick Filter... menu. You can also right click
the outline header and select the filter menu, in which case
you will be placed on the appropriate page of the filter
dialog to configure options for that column. For example,
right click on the due column and select filter will open the
filter dialog on the Dates tab so you can quickly enter a
filter based on the due date. The quick filter can also be
used to temporarily modify an existing filter. To do this,
enable the filter to be modified and then open the quick
filter dialog while holding the shift key. The quick filter
will be initialized with the settings of the current filter.
The quick filter is disabled in the same way as normal filters.
It can also be activated again just like normal filters (i.e.
select the " <Quick Filter> " filter from the Filters toolbar's
filter list). The quick filter is never saved to the outline
file.
- Added ability to duplicate an existing filter or view.
- Optimized Bonsai background processing, particularly improving
CPU usage when the Bonsai app is placed into the background.
- Support for importing and exporting of Bonsai outlines files
in a Bonsai Palm (.pdb) format.
- Added Alt+0 desktop shortcut to mirror the Shift+
Keypad '+' shortcut for expanding the entire outline. This
shortcut is easier to access on laptop PCs verses the keypad
version and complements the Alt+'1' ... Alt+'4' shortcuts for
expanding the outline to level 'n'.
- The "Edit/Insert File Link" menu now allows multiple file
links to be inserted.
- Now checks for changes to the disk-based version of an opened
outline file. The user will be notified and given a chance to
reload the outline file. This check is done when the Bonsai
application is brought to the foreground and when the outline
is initially modified.

Fixed on desktop:
- Resolved sync issue that caused any category icon changes on
the handheld to be overwritten by the current desktop settings.
- Optimized syncing a large outline. Large outlines that were
deeply nested might see significantly longer than normal sync
times (in one particular case, a 40x reduction in sync time
was seen).
- Fixed issue that would cause note text containing ';amp;' to
be changed to '&'.
- Corrected Bonsai U3 USB support of the template print menu.
Previously, Bonsai was unable to locate the OXT files in the
installation folder on the U3 USB device.
- Fixed CSV outline import issue that caused problems with
importing data where a multi-line text in the outline item
text or the note field would not be properly parsed.
- When added a new sibling, the software will set defaults for
various fields based on the new item settings. When configured
for using the sibling's value, a check was only being made for
the previous sibling. This caused unexpected results if the item
is added immediately following the parent such that no previous
sibling will exist. With this change, if a previous sibling
is not found, a check is also made for the next sibling.
- Resolved problem that would cause the Bonsai HotSync conduit to
crash if the Palm handheld contained a corrupt Bonsai Keywords
db.

Changes in version 4.2.7
New on desktop:
- Added Ctrl++ and Ctrl+- desktop shortcuts to mirror the
Ctrl+Keypad '+' and Ctrl+Keypad '-' shortcuts for expanding and
collapsing the entire branch. These shortcuts are easier to
access on laptop PCs verses the keypad versions.

Fixed on desktop:
- Fixed sync issue that could cause keyword configuration
changes on the Palm to be overwritten by the desktop settings.
- Corrected problem where Bonsai could crash when inserting
multi-line text near the bottom of the outline. This corrects
an issue introduced in the 4.2.6 release.
- Fixed issue where the Find (or Find Next) would not advance if
a filter was applied that includes a setting of "Hide entire
branch when parent does not match filter" and the find operation
located the text within the subtree of an excluded parent.
- Resolve Bonsai crash that would randomly occur while parsing
outline text search for URL strings if the text contains
multi-byte characters.

Fixed on handheld:
- Fixed possible crash that could occur when scrolling through
the keyword list on the Palm.

Changes in version 4.2.6
New on desktop:
- Added the "Collapse Branch" and "Zoom Off" buttons to the
Expand/Collapse toolbar. These operations are also in the
View menu and have the Ctrl-Keypad - and Ctrl-Alt-Y keyboard
shortcuts.

Fixed on desktop:
- Fixed problem where Expand All was not expanding completed items
when the outline was zoomed.
- Resolved problem with slider control not updating numeric percent
complete edit control if the user used the keyboard to change
the slider position on the Item Details dialog.
- Fixed the category sort order in the Item/Category menu to be
done case insensitive to match the way the categories are sorted
in the Edit Categories list control.
- Resolved issue with the U3 version not being able to find its icon
file (stored in the Apps\Bonsai folder on the U3 drive) when
switching between PCs that map a different drive letter to the
U3 device.
- Fixed outline item indention so if the sibling above is collapsed,
the item will become the last child item of that sibling rather
than the incorrect result of becoming the first child.
- Corrected an issue with processing multi-byte characters in the
text of an outline. While I could not reproduce this, the change
should fix a crash that was seen while opening Bonsai.
- Fixed issue with incorrect total being displayed when using Alt-A
keyboard shortcut to select all items when a filter is enabled.
- Resolved Bonsai crash when inserting from the clipboard while the
current cursor location is on the last displayed item of the outline
which is a collapsed parent.
- Fixed problem where Bonsai could duplicate the outline entry in the
outline manager under certain conditions.
- Resolved drag selection bug where the auto-scrolling would not be
terminated when the mouse button was released before returning to
the window area.
- Fixed work wrapping issue where if the wrap occurred on a hyphen
character, the hyphen would not be drawn as part of the text.
- Corrected the "Select Date..." context menu handling where the
calendar control being displayed was not initialized to the
value of the field being edited.
- When enabling a flat sorted filter, if the current item is no longer
visible, the first displayed item will now be set to the current
item.
- Changed the current item positioning so if an item is modified such
it is no longer visible due to a flat sorted filter, the new
current item is based on the current sort order rather than the
outline order when locating the "closest visible item".
- Fixed sync issue so an outline on the handheld containing an item
with an invalid category will be handled more robustly.
- Fixed problem with Bonsai reading a 3.x outline file.
- Resolved issue with reading icons from an unusually formatted PRC
resource file.
- Fixed conduit crash if user deletes both desktop and palm outline
files manually outside of the Bonsai UI. Now an error will be
entered in the HotSync log.
- Toggling on/off a filter will now attempt to keep the current item
positioned at the same offset in the outline window assuming the
item is still visible.
- Resolved issue where the current view was not being saved before
switching views.

Changes in version 4.2.5
New on desktop:
- Add ability to select multiple outline items using the Shift-Up
and Shift-Down keys.
Fixed on desktop:
- Fixed synchronization bug where moving a group of items to a new
location in the outline might result in some items reverting back
to the original location after the synchronization completed.
- During a HotSync, Bonsai was prompting the user when an outline
auto-save file was detected. This prompt will no longer be displayed.
- Fixed issue where Bonsai would under certain conditions crash when
using the Find command.
- Resolved cursor positioning issue when using Ctrl-Enter in the item
text to start a new line.

Changes in version 4.2.4
Fixed on desktop:
- Bonsai 3.x users upgrading to 4.2 were losing their outline configuration
in outline manager. This has been resolved.
- Fixed problem with synchronizing an outline from the handheld to the desktop which
left the desktop outline truncated if certain conditions existed in the categories list.
- Fixed issue with the New Outline Defaults dialog Category tab where under certain
conditions it allowed the Unfiled category to be deleted. This should not be allowed.
Fixed on handheld:
- Fixed problem where Bonsai was locking the device when doing a View/Refresh
under certain conditions related to entries in the user's Task database. The
Palm would lockup displaying a "Performing Checks" message.

Changes in version 4.2.3
Fixed on desktop:
- Fixed Bonsai crash on startup that occurred if the "My Documents"
directory was located in the root of a drive.
- Resolved an issue with reading older 3.x format outline files.
- Find would fail to find text under certain conditions when
using a filter that included all children of a matched parent.
- Synchronization could encounter a fatal error if a filter
was defined specifying particular categories to include.
- Fixed problem with U3 version where it failed to reopen outlines
at startup if the U3 device changed drive letters, which typically
happens as you move the device from PC to PC.

Changes in version 4.2.2
New on desktop:
- Added support for evernote links which have a format of:
evernote://C:\Users\fred\Documents\MYEVER~1\DataBases\EverNote.enb?guid=[11CAB2D8-744A-E8BA-0C144682872A7557]
When using these links, you will need to avoid using embedded space characters. For
example, replace "My EverNote Files" with the short file name "MYEVER~1". You may also
be able reconfigure Evernote to use a directory path that does not contain any spaces
to avoid needing to edit the link each time you insert it into Bonsai.
Fixed on desktop:
- Fixed Bonsai to handling reading v3.x outline files. This problem was introduced in
the v4.2.1 release.
- Fixed runtime error that would occur when searching for text while a zoom is enabled
under certain conditions.
- Fixed a lockup that would occur when collapsing an already collapsed parent under
certain conditions while a zoom is enabled.
- Added code to better handle a startup error that was causing Bonsai to terminate
if the workspace state was written by an older version of Bonsai.

Changes in version 4.2.1
New on desktop:
- Added support for running Bonsai on a U3 USB memory key. Please download and
install the Bonsai U3 setup (BonsaiU3.exe) in order to install.
- Added an auto-save feature. A backup copy of the outline file will be made while
you are editing your outline. If for some reason Bonsai is terminated before the
outline is saved, upon reopening the outline you will have the option to use the
auto-save backup or your last saved version of the outline. The View/Global Options
General tab can be used to enable/disable this feature (default is enabled) and
to configure how often the auto-save should be performed.
- Added PARENT_TEXT and PARENT_NOTE substitutions for custom export templates.
Fixed on desktop:
- First release to officially support Windows Vista. It is also recommended that the Palm Desktops
"Data directory" configuration should be located somewhere other than under "C:\Program Files".
To check and possibly reconfigure this setting, open Palm Desktop and select the Tools\Options menu.
Under the General tab, examine the "Data directory" setting. Configuring this to be under your
documents directory (i.e. \users\<username>\documents ) would be a good choice. You may
encounter Bonsai synchronization issues if this setting is located under the "C:\Program Files"
directory.
- Changed the clipboard handling so now copy/cut/paste operations can be carried out at the item level.
Previously these clipboard operations were disabled when one or more items were selected in the
outline (although Bonsai did provide Copy Branch and Paste Branch commands).
- Fixed several problems where Bonsai's Outline Manager settings would not be saved. The desktop app
failed to create the directory where the settings are stored if it did not exist. In some cases,
newly added outlines and the synchronization state of the outline would not be saved.
- Added better detection of printer type to properly set printing mode to color or black and white.
- Better handling with naming new files (will better protect someone from overwriting an existing
Outline1.otl if they for whatever reason do not change the default filename).
- Resolved issue with scroll wheel handling on certain hardware. Previous Bonsai versions would scroll
down the outline but would quickly "jump" up the outline when scrolling up.
- Fixed problem where URL hyperlinks would be parsed incorrectly if it contained a vertical bar
character (|).
- Fixed problem where outline window was not updated after restoring a maximized outline.
- Fixed Bonsai crash when clicking a Todo checkbox and then dragging the mouse beyond the last
outline item before releasing.
- Improved error handling when saving the outline file.
- Fixed Bonsai crash when running on a PC with a missing or corrupt MSXML component. An appropriate
error message will now be generated when this is detected.
- Changed expand/collapse to only operate on current zoomed items rather than the entire outline.
- Fixed the edit categories dialog so an icon can be configured for the unfiled category.
- Improved editing item text for multi-line items. Cursor positioning using Up/Down arrow keys would
behave strangle. The Home and End keys now move to the start and end of the current line rather
than to the start and end of the item. Added support for Shift Up/Down arrow keys to extend
the current selection within the text item.
- Changed the zoom out function (View/Zoom Out - Ctrl-Y) to only zoom out one level rather than
turning zoom mode off. Added zoom off function (View/Zoom Off - Ctrl-Alt-Y).
- Fixed problem with scroll position when deleting several selected outline items. Previously
after deleting the scroll position might jump for no apparent reason.

Changes in version 4.1.2

- On some installations the current user was not properly selected when starting
the desktop application causing a crash.

Changes in version 4.0.4

Fixed on the desktop:
- Ctrl+Tab when the outline tabs are not displayed would crash.
- Setting the Completion date using the Completed column when filtered
for incomplete items would set the date of the wrong item.
- The screen was not refreshed properly when a filter with the
Parent Shows All Children option is used under these conditions;
when a parent does not match the filter and a child item is checked
off so it no longer matches the filter, and the child is at the level
where it would always be shown for a matching parent.
- Pasting multiple lines of text that have invalid tab indentation would
result in an invalid outline hierarchy. For example, items that are
tabbed in by more than 1 level beyond the line above. This may have
resulted in problems during synchronization.

Fixed on the handheld:
- Items created as Simple and later changed to Task or To Do would have invalid dates.
- Tap and hold until selection box appears and then lift stylus without dragging would crash.
- Date fields not properly cleared for Simple items. Would result in invalid dates if converted to To Do's or Tasks.
- The screen was not refreshed properly when a filter with the
Parent Shows All Children option is used under these conditions;
when a parent does not match the filter and a child item is checked
off so it no longer matches the filter, and the child is at the level
where it would always be shown for a matching parent.
- Pasting multiple lines of text that have invalid tab indentation would
result in an invalid outline hierarchy. For example, items that are
tabbed in by more than 1 level beyond the line above. This may have
resulted in problems during synchronization.
- Text pasted using the command bar would be lost if another attribute was
immediately changed using a column (e.g., category column).
- The address book database was opened as soon as the Details Links tab was
displayed. This would cause a very long delay on some handhelds.
- Unlock records that are left locked by a problem in Palm OS version 5.4.9 (T|X & 700p).

- Fixed problem when attempting to Promote(outdent) outline item when zoomed.
- Fix crash when doing a Cut Branch of first branch in outline.

- Items with multiple keywords that start with special characters do not sync
properly. Caused by different collating sequence on handheld and desktop.
- Linking with Repeating To Do's that use "After Completed" mode for
setting next Due Date would incorrectly set checkbox as complete.
